Purpose

The Lead Systems Engineer is a key member of our Technical Operations (TechOps) team. The responsibilities of the role are both broad and deep, and require technical strength across a range of infrastructure products and services. The successful candidate will be a proven technical leader, and a hands-on wizard at systems administration, automation, networking, and configuration management. The Lead Systems Engineer will partner with the Director of TechOps to set the technical and operational direction for the team, and will guide other members in executing to plan. The role also requires work at a fast pace, the ability to multi-task, and the agility to sustain momentum through directional changes that sometimes come rapidly.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform network configuration tasks and work with the existing team to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the network infrastructure.
  • Continually strive to automate and enhance operations by identifying areas of improvement, writing scripts, documenting the environment and processes.
  • Develop and maintain scripts for process automation and reporting. Leverage scripting to build required automation on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Implement and utilize monitoring tools to find problems and resolve/escalate to appropriate teams to ensure that we meet our infrastructure, coding and testing standards.
  • Install, manage, and support VMware ESX 5.5+ servers as needed.
  • Install, manage, and support Linux (RHEL, CentOS) servers as needed.
  • Manage disk-to-disk and disk-to-tape backup processes using utilities such as Amanda Network Backup, rsync, IBM AS9000 storage snapshots, and database backups.
  • Assist with SAN administration, backup/recovery, and system administration.
  • Work closely with colleagues to identify and resolve complex issues or problems that affect production, development, or other infrastructure environments.
  • Perform other project work and operational necessities as required.

 

Qualifications

  • Strong Linux administration skills

o Expert troubleshooting skills: understanding of networking stack in Linux systems, mastery of common directories, configuration and troubleshooting of common server software (i.e. Apache, MySQL, Tomcat, etc.)

o Ability to read and create documentation and man pages

  • Strong DevOps skills

o Broad experience across source control, configuration management, deployment automation, containerization, orchestration, and cloud infrastructure management tools.

  • Strong network administration skills.

o Familiar with switching and routing, and best practices for network setup

o Deep experience with iptables and Linux-based networking

  • Deep expertise in system administration automation with Python and Bash.
  • Experience with network monitoring and performance management tools.
  • Ability to speak to protocols/technologies like HTTP, SSL, LDAP, JDBC, Servlet/JSP, SQL, HTML, XML, and ability to explain differences between them.
  • Experience utilizing a wide variety of open source technologies and tools

o E.g. Apache, MySQL, OpenLDAP, ApacheDS, Tomcat, Docker, Jenkins

  • Excellent leadership, organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.

 

Helpful Qualifications

  • Experience working in a SaaS provider.
  • Experience with Fortinet, Cisco, and Juniper technologies.
  • Experience with MySQL.
  • Experience with SaltStack, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Understanding of Kanban/Agile processes

 

 

Education and/or Experience

  • 5+ years of experience with system and network administration
  • Significant experience with DevOps
